Tobias Cole, Music Director
Tobias Cole is one of Australia’s most successful countertenors, travelling the country as a soloist in opera, oratorio and theatre. In Canberra, where he is based with his wife and three children, he is Music Director of two choirs, Oriana Chorale and University of Canberra Chorale.
Tobias is an honours graduate of The University of Sydney music department and an Associate of London’s Royal College of Music. In 2002 he was the first countertenor to win Opera Foundation Australia’s Metropolitan Opera Young Artist Study Award, spending three months in New York at the Met.
His recent solo performances include concerts with Sydney Philharmonia, Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Society and Salut Baroque and performing the role of Medoro in Opera Australia’s new production of Handel’s Orlando. Shortly, Tobias will reprise this role in Melbourne.
Recent conducting performances include The Three Choirs, a program of Renaissance works performed by Oriana Chorale alongside Igitur Nos and The Resonants; and Into the Light, a program by UC Chorale of Renaissance and early Baroque choral and recorder works.
Tobias is currently preparing Canberra Choral Society and Oriana Chorale for a performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, to be conducted by Brett Weymark in Llewellyn Hall in December. Also in late December, he will conduct the joined forces of UC Chorale and Oriana Chorale in two performances of Handel’s Messiah in All Saints’ Church, Ainslie and St Christopher’s Cathedral, Manuka.
